my return to juicing + a recipe!

I know you're probably wondering why anyone would leave juicing in the first place, but sadly, I did. We had bought a juicer two years ago when we were living in BC, and when moving back to Ontario, we had to make executive decisions on what would stay there in storage and what would come home with us. For some dumb reason, the juicer was on the list of things to leave behind. Bad, bad decision...

Luckily, I had the chance to go back to BC to visit family a few weeks ago, and you better believe that bringing the juicer back to Ontario was my first priority.

It was such a priority that you don't even want to know the extremes I went to, to make sure it happened.

Ok, I'll tell you those extremes ;).

I went to Kelowna with one suitcase, and came home with two. I purposely put a smaller suitcase into a bigger one for my travels out to BC, so I could use one for clothes and the other for storage items (aka: the juicer) coming back home.

It was the best idea I've ever had. Sure, I looked like a diva traveling alone with two humungous suitcases when I arrived at my home airport, but it was all worth it for that little baby above!

Getting all the unpacking and cleaning sorted out for the juicer brings me to today...

After the hubby left for work this morning, I (naturally) rolled over to his side of the bed. I swear his pillow has a bit more 'poof' to it. After a bit more sleep, and pretending like I never drooled on his pillow, I woke up knowing today was the day to return to juicing.

I haven't really been feeling the greatest the past few days (whatever the husband passed my way), so a green juice felt like the perfect solution, and hence the reason for making sure that juicer was ready for business today! If I could go to bed tonight sans stuffy nose, I would be absolutely ecstatic.

I first started by rinsing my veggies off in a sink full of cold water.

My chard was really wilted, so I thought cold water might revive it a such luck.

After a quick soak session and drying off, I was ready to get my juicer back to work!


My 'Return' Green Juice

(Makes a 1 cup serving.)

  • 1 bunch organic Swiss chard
  • 5-6 de-stemmed kale leaves
  • 3 stalks celery
  • 1 mini cucumber
  • 1 small nob organic ginger
  • 1/3 organic lemon (peel on)

Put all ingredients through the juicer. (I started with the leafy greens.)

You can really use any veggies you want, these were just the ones I had on hand.

You can also add whatever 'sweetness' you need to make your green juice taste less like drinking greens. I used ginger to help with my stuffy nose and also lemon because I love the flavour it adds. Fruits work just as well if you don't want a strong green flavour, like apples (I just didn't have any at the house).

For me: I like having the 'green' taste still there, with a hint of something else - in today's case, ginger and lemon.

I'm just so happy to have my juicer back and glad I finally used it!
