how to make 4-ingredient all natural deodorant

Ok, so let me tell you that my journey to “greening” my home began well before deodorant. I thought antiperspirant was the ONLY way to go if you didn’t want to smell by noon & definitely did not care about ingredients that went into it. But hear me out for a second on why natural is NOW the way to go... (or always has been, but I didn't realize until luckily I chose to invest in my health!) Yes, sure, you might have to reapply natural deodorant a time or two more than the typical deo stick you see in the pharmacy, but at what cost is it to you to smell good for the whole day without reapplication?

This is where I hope I can show you WHY making your own deodorant is not only better for your health (and with this recipe below it actually lasts the WHOLE day—whoops to antiperspirant!), but it doesn’t take much to make it. Actually, go check your cupboards. I bet you have at least 90% of the ingredients in your cupboards right now!

But why is antiperspirant so bad for me?

Well the biggest issue (now that I’m more informed) is that antiperspirant works to block your ducts from doing what they naturally wanna do…SWEAT! Elsa had it right when she said ‘let it go’ - I think she meant your sweat! ;)

Also, most antiperspirant (and even deodorants) contain fragrance which is a second no-no. Because the truth about fragrance is that it can contain hormone disruptors and is among the top five allergens in the world. So don’t just avoid it in your deodorant, but in EVERYTHING! (Ok, or just start replacing items when you can!)

And lastly, talc. You know… the stuff that makes up baby powder (which please, PLEASE never actually put on your baby!). Think about those Secret Powder Fresh bars - this ingredient is lingering in them. It not only can cause respiratory & skin irritations, but is a possible ovarian cancer carcinogen. This causes red flags for me for two reason: 1) hello…cancer causer! and 2) it causes female cancers and females are definitely more likely to use products containing talc.

So just ditch the antiperspirant and get to making this deo I did last week that not only lasts longer than antiperspirants I used to wear (and trust me now that I live in FL, I’m sweating a hella lot!), but can be made using ingredients you have in your kitchen!

Four-Ingredient Homemade Deodorant

  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder or cornstarch (I flip flop between the two)
  • 4 tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 10-15 drops essential oils (make sure they’re pure therapeutic - learn more here)

Melt the coconut oil then add in arrowroot or cornstarch & baking soda and combine. Then add in essential oils and stir to incorporate. Then either place in a glass container {like picture above} or try and put in a deo stick!

I used 5 drops melaleuca/tea tree oil, 5 wild orange & 1 geranium, but feel free to play around with the combos!

I actually LOVE the texture of this deo even though I don’t have it in a stick form and have to scoop it out of the container to use. Next time I do plan on playing around with putting it in a deo stick, so keep your eyes peeled for when that happens.

It’s honestly such a relief to know you’re using a product that is not only beneficial for your health, but works. I promise you that you can accomplish that with a lot of homemade products + essential oils. There are natural solutions out there waiting for you! You just have to be ready and willing to look for them!

Hope you all have a great day & chat soon!
